Gone with the wind…

Jeudi, mai 5th, 2011

The « char à voile » (that’s land-sailing or sand-sailing in english) is a very popular activity here in the Vendée.   The « chars » (or yachts) are typically three-wheeled vehicles that function much like a sailboat, except that they are operated from a sitting or lying position and steered by pedals or hand levers.

Amongst the several long sandy beaches on the Côte de Lumière, the Grande Plage of Saint Gilles Croix de Vie is one of the best places to try this thrilling sport.  If you are planning a holiday in the area and are looking for a bit of an adrenaline rush, this could just be the thing for you!

Wind Force and Semvie Nautique offer both adults and children as young as 8 a taster session (which includes all required equipment) to discover what « char à voile » is all about.   The courses usually run from spring until late autumn, with times varying according to the tides.  And if you catch the bug, you can come back to enjoy a 3 days break which not only includes more « char à voile » tuition, but also accommodation, food and entrance to the swimming pool.  A good way to recover from all the excitement!  More details regarding this short break can be found on the Saint Gilles Tourism Office website.

« Le Tour » wheels into the Vendée…

Mercredi, avril 13th, 2011

Well with all the lovely weather we’ve been enjoying over the last week, I’ve decided to start cycling to the village every day to get the bread (in my mind this is a cunning plan to spend the calories BEFORE I top them up over lunch!).

When I arrived in the Vendée, it didn’t take me long to notice that, everywhere you go, there are always lots of cyclists around…  Now that’s hardly surprising given that the Vendée counts over 750kms of dedicated cycling trails!  We’re very lucky to be living by such a trail at La Ruette and so we often see clubs, families or « silver riders » cycle past our house at the weekend.   The tourists are also easy to spot – they invariably have a look of relief on their faces when we offer to help them (in English!) find their way back to the local campsites!!!

This year is particularly exciting for all two-wheels lovers as the world’s largest spectator event is coming to the Vendée…  Yes, if you haven’t heard already, the Tour de France will indeed start on the Atlantic Coast on 2nd July and follow the Côte de Lumière from the Gois (island of Noirmoutier) all the way down to Talmont Saint Hilaire before heading back to the North Vendée.  After a time-trial stage on 3rd July in Les Essarts, Le Tour will be back on the coast Monday 4th July for a third stage start in Olonne-sur-Mer.

Luckily for all our UK cycling friends (and sadly for our lawn!), our garden can easily be turned into a make-shift campsite for the weekend but, for all of you bike enthusiasts out there, I wouldn’t delay booking some accommodation if you want to stay somewhere near the coast on those days…

I’ve included the full Tour route in the Vendée below but you can download your own copy on the Vendée Tourisme website, where you will also find accommodation details (by the way, one of our B&B rooms is still available on those dates so feel free to drop me a line if you’re interested!).

Allez, allez!!!!

Will Sam Davies return to Les Sables d’Olonne in 2012?

Jeudi, avril 7th, 2011

Samantha Davies, the Portsmouth-born skipper, is a bit of a star here in France and particularly in the Vendée after her brilliant 4th place finish in the 2008/09 Vendée Globe single-handled round-the-world race.  Today, I had the pleasure to meet Sam at her book-signing event in Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie.

This girl really « just wants to have fun » on the water (as she sang half-way through the Atlantic) and her idea of fun just happens to be sailing a 60ft boat in the forthcoming 2012 Vendée Globe!  Now the sailors amongst you will already know all about this landmark event and the incredible atmosphere it creates in Les Sables d’Olonne.

But even if you’re not at all into boating, you should really think about making the trip to Les Sables.  Once there, you can take a long walk along the sea front, stroll through the cobbled shopping streets or simply watch life go by whilst enjoying your ice-cream (always top of my list!).

If you want a taste of what Les Sables has to offer, the local Tourism Office will be running an exciting competition called « Les Sables Inside » from 18th April to 29th May 2011.  The 6 « immersion weekends » prizes will include luxury accommodation, French gastronomy and the opportunity to have an insider’s view of the main attractions – for instance: follow a keeper in the lion’s den at Les Sables’ famous zoo, get a few poker tips from the croupier at the Casino, or even sail with one of the Vendée Globe skippers and turn yourself into Sam Davies for the day!

So, I don’t know about you, but I will certainly be putting my name down…

Mary’s Blog is Back!!!

Mardi, avril 5th, 2011

After a year’s break, Mary’s Vendée, the seaside-loving Brits’ favourite blog, is back!   This time, British expat wife, Carine, 39, living in the Vendée since 2008 with her Lancastrian husband Stephen, will share her tips, ideas for days out and perhaps even a secret or two about the Vendée’s Côte de Lumière…  So stay tuned and see you soon!

Vendee – St Petersburg Multihull Boat Race

Dimanche, mai 2nd, 2010

The Vendée St Petersburg Village

Brand new for 2010, the Vendée – St Petersburg Multi Hull Boat Race!  (link in French). Setting off from St Gilles Croix de Vie on the 16th May, nine boats  will be taking part in this adventure, with a three man team aboard each boat.

The Village is now open to the public with all boats present on Pontoon No 8, that’s down near the bandstand on the Croix de Vie side of town.

The two pyramids you can see on my picture are jam-packed with fabulous info on the race, they’ve really pulled the stops out, we loved it. There’s lots of fun interactive games for the kids.  Including a computer simulated boat race on the big screen!

St Petersburg

The race will cover around 3791 nautical miles with a ten day stop-over planned in St Petersburg (some guys have all the luck!) before setting off again on the return journey on Monday, 31st May.  The first boats should reach St Gilles around the 4th or 5th June.

The idea is that this race will alternate with the Vendée Globe (which takes place every four years in Les Sables d’Olonne).

I’ve managed to visit the Vendée Globe Village twice but sadly never got to see the boats actually leave the port.  However, St Gilles’ Pontoon 8 is a ten minute drive from home, so perhaps I’ll get lucky this year!

The Village is over 1000 m2, and it’s set up on the Carpark opposite the Conserverie, once again, on the Croix de Vie side.  Really and truly and absolutely worth visiting!

Open from Friday 7th to Monday 24th May and from Tuesday 1st to Sunday 13th June from 10 am to 7 pm.
Public loos, coffee shop, souvenir stands and even a ‘Change Bébé’, they’ve thought of everything!

Surf in Vendée – Protest Vendée Pro 2010

Mercredi, avril 14th, 2010

Vendée Protest Pro

The Vendée school spring break is under way and there’ll be plenty to keep me occupied!  I’m hoping to get a run down to Bretignolles sur Mer to see the World Surfing Professional Championships under way (21st to 25th April).

No need to fly to the other side of the world to see the action, the surf champions are on our very doorstep for the Protest Vendée Pro 2010, the  first French stage of the ASP World Qualifying Series 4*.

The coast of Brétignolles sur Mer

We’ll hopefully get an excellent view of the action from the craggy coastline. The French have won this stage of the championship for the last 3 yrs so the atmosphere is bound to be electric!  There’ll be food & drinks stalls set up and at night, the spot will be lit up!

Check out this webcam link to see the spot live!  The English discovered the spot at La Sauzaie way back in the Big Hair Days of the 80’s & it’s now considered one of the top European spots.

The words ‘ barrels, powerful carves and vertical assaults’ might be double dutch to me, but this is 10 minutes down the coast from me and I don’t want to miss it!

On the 17th & 18th April, La Coupe de France [the French Cup] will begin the 2010 season of the French Surfing Federation.

Then on the 19th & 20th, it’s the young European women surfers who’ll take to the waves for the le Bréti Girls Pro Junior (the Bréti Girls Pro Junior Competition).
