Oh, what a perfect day in Olonne sur Mer…
I’ve just had one of those perfectly blissful days that come along every now and again…ten of us met up on our friends’ private marshes in Olonne sur Mer for a day’s fishing, good food and wine, and great crack à la française.
We caught one trout between ten of us, but hey, who’s counting! He’s chilling now in the freezer (anybody got a recipe they’d like to share?!). Perhaps you don’t have the fortune to know anyone with their very own bit of marshland but don’t let this stop you if you’re in the area!
Rent a bike, pick up a cycling map ‘Sentiers Pédestres & Cyclables’ from the tourist office and get pedalling! The superbly maintained walking & cycling tracks in and around these marshes and the canal take you through some seriously breath-catching scenery. There’s also another free guide ‘Sentiers Cyclables’ available in the tourist offices, though it’s much more general.
Pack your camera and some sun cream for the journey, Météo France has announced some scorchers for the days to come. Happy Cycling!

hello everybody i’m aidan form ireland, myself and colette have been to vendee several times and have stayed in st gilles and st hilaire. over the years i have cycled many times along the cycle tracks. i love the sunny weather and the breeze from the atlantic – perfect cycling conditions. i would recommend the vendee for any cyclists young or old – lots of flat bits!!!
Hi Marti, Olonne is about 25 kms down the coast from St Hilaire. Yes, you’ll bump into the mozzies around the marshes but only late evening! So if you’re cycling during the day, you shouldn’t be bothered by them at all, and there’s no such thing as a silly question!
If you are eating outdoors, there is a brilliant, brilliant product you can buy in the supermarchés, called Mortis Moustiques, they are anti-mosquito coils that you burn, each one lasts for hours and hours, and there are 10 in a box. We still have our stock from last yr in the cupboard! They come sold in an orangey-yellow and black box.
Oh my goodness – that looks so gorgeous – we were hoping to get to Vendee this summer – is this near St Hilaire? and are there a lot of biting insects around the marshes? (sounds like a silly question but I like to be prepared with insect repellant if I need it!)
Thanks for posting this Mary!
